The 1971 Le Mans is legendary for being the last held on the original circuit before major safety changes. It was also the final year the Porsche 917 competed in its original form in the 24 Hours of Le Mans due to regulation changes.

Mike Hailwood, while navigating through heavy rain, lost control due to aquaplaning and collided with a stationary Alfa Romeo at Tertre Rouge corner. This incident led to the retirement.
