Ferrari Dino 246 SP #28
Pedro Rodriguez, 1962 Le Mans 24 Hours
The Ferrari Dino 246 SP was a mid-engined sports prototype developed by Ferrari in the early 1960s. Equipped with a 2.4L V6 engine, it was part of Ferrari's efforts to innovate in sports car racing. Chassis #0796TR had a notable racing history, including victories at the Targa Florio and Nürburgring 1000 km earlier in 1962.
The Rodríguez brothers from Mexico were among the youngest and most promising drivers of their time. Pedro, the elder, was known for his versatility across different racing disciplines, while Ricardo was celebrated for his remarkable talent at a young age. Their participation in the 1962 Le Mans race marked one of the few occasions they competed together in a factory Ferrari entry.
Photographs from the race start show the Ferrari Dino 246 SP bearing the ‘PROVA MO-49’ plate. ‘Prova’ indicates a test or prototype vehicle in Italian, and ‘MO‘ refers to Modena, the province where Ferrari's headquarters are located. Such plates were typically used for factory test and prototype vehicles.
Starting from 6th position on the grid, the Rodríguez brothers demonstrated competitive pace during the race. Unfortunately, their effort was cut short after 174 laps due to a gearbox failure, leading to their retirement from the race.
The 1962 Le Mans race was one of the last major events the Rodríguez brothers contested together. Tragically, Ricardo Rodríguez lost his life later that year during practice for the non-championship Mexican Grand Prix. Pedro continued his racing career, achieving significant success in endurance racing and Formula 1 before his untimely death in 1971.
